ADAPTATION AND PSYCHOMETRIC VALIDATION OF THE UKRAINIAN VERSION OF BROADBENT’S COGNITIVE FAILURES QUESTIONNAIRE (CFQ)

Abstract

The article presents the results of the adaptation and psychometric validation of the Ukrainian version of the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ) by D. Broadbent. The relevance of the study is driven by the need for reliable instrumentation to assess an individual’s subjective cognitive reliability under conditions of high information load and stress. The study sample consisted of 200 participants (35 men and 165 women) aged 16 to 57 years (M = 25.1; Me = 19). To verify validity, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) were employed. Based on the results of exploratory factor analysis (principal axis factoring with Oblimin rotation), a stable four-factor structure of the construct was identified: general forgetfulness and attention deficits, distractibility, motor blunders, and executive control deficits. High internal consistency of the scale was established (Cronbach’s α = 0.96) for assessing cognitive failures over the past month. Descriptive statistics analysis revealed significant positive skewness and kurtosis (As = 2.64; Ex = 17.9) for the motor blunders factor, indicating its specific role in the structure of cognitive vulnerability. The convergent validity of the instrument was confirmed: the total score of cognitive failures positively correlates with stress (r = 0.39) and has an inverse relationship with the level of mindfulness (r = -0.51). It was found that gender has no statistically significant impact on the frequency of errors (all p > 0.05), while age demonstrates an inverse correlation (r = -0.19), suggesting a higher tendency among young people to report their own cognitive lapses. The results obtained allow for the recommendation of the Ukrainian version of the CFQ for use in scientific research, professional selection, and the applied diagnostics of the cognitive reliability of specialists in stressful environments, as well as for monitoring the cognitive load of students.
