VOLUNTEERING AS A MANIFESTATION OF THE SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL MECHANISM OF UKRAINE’S SOCIAL CONSOLIDATION

The article examines volunteering as a socio-psychological mechanism of consolidation of Ukrainian society under conditions of martial law. It analyzes the psychological, social, and cultural dimensions of volunteering that determine its role in strengthening social cohesion, developing civic responsibility, and maintaining societal stability. Volunteering is conceptualized not merely as a form of prosocial behavior or civic engagement, but as a process of internalization of collective values that fosters identification with the community and shapes a sense of shared purpose. The study highlights that since 2014, the Ukrainian volunteer movement has evolved from spontaneous self-organization into a sustainable institution of civil society, playing a crucial role in defense support, humanitarian assistance, and social adaptation of war-affected populations.Volunteering acts as a channel for rebuilding horizontal trust networks among citizens, promoting a culture of mutual assistance, and enhancing the sense of collective efficacy – key factors of social resilience. According to recent sociological surveys, the consistently high level of public trust in volunteers (over 80%) and the large-scale involvement of citizens in volunteer activities (about two-thirds of the population) indicate the strengthening of social capital and the formation of a new model of civic solidarity. Special attention is given to the role of youth, for whom volunteering has become not only a practice of empathy and social responsibility but also a means of self- realization and development of a mature civic identity.Overall, volunteering in contemporary Ukraine has become a core element of national self-identification and a symbol of the society’s moral resilience. It provides psychological integration through shared action, reinforces belief in the citizens’ ability to influence social processes, and lays the foundation for a new culture of solidarity that consolidates Ukrainian statehood and social unity even amid deep crises.
