Abstract

This article presents the Ukrainian-language adaptation and psychometric validation of the “Dream and Sleep Emotions and Anxiety” (DSEA) questionnaire developed by Mar Mediano and Enrique G. Fernández- Abascal. The instrument assesses sleep-related anxiety and the emotional valence of dreams. The Ukrainian version demonstrated acceptable to high item discrimination. The internal structure was evaluated using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (EFA/CFA), internal consistency (Cronbach’s α), and convergent validity. Norms for score interpretation were established, along with a structured interpretive framework. Data were collected online in accordance with ethical standards and informed consent procedures (sample size: 155 participants).For the DSEA-S scale, the original three-factor model was replicated (difficulty initiating sleep; sleep maintenance; post-awakening anxiety), with acceptable confirmatory factor indices (CFI ≈ 0.94; TLI ≈ 0.90; SRMR ≈ 0.04; RMSEA ≈ 0.08). The internal consistency of the total scale was α = 0.74; Cronbach’s α values for individual subscales ranged from 0.50 to 0.83. For the DSEA-D scale, the original two-factor model (positive/ negative emotional valence) was confirmed, with acceptable fit indices (CFI ≈ 0.92; SRMR ≈ 0.07; RMSEA ≈ 0.08).The internal consistency of the total scale was α = 0.87; Cronbach’s α for subscales exceeded 0.87. Convergent validity and test-retest reliability were also confirmed. Quantile transformation was applied during standardization to establish normative thresholds.The Ukrainian version of the DSEA demonstrates a confirmed factor structure, acceptable to high reliability, and adequate convergent validity. The instrument is suitable for scientific research and practical application, including screening and monitoring of sleep-related anxiety and dream emotionality.
